Sustainable packaging: materials, waste reduction and regulations

Sustainability in packaging is no longer just a marketing option: the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) sets binding targets by 2030. But true sustainability also comes from reducing food waste, which correct packaging dramatically cuts.

The sustainable packaging paradox

Less packaging does not always mean more sustainability. A complete Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) shows that food waste has an environmental impact 5-10 times greater than the packaging itself. A 10-gram plastic bag that extends meat shelf life by 15 days prevents 500 grams of wasted meat: the environmental balance is strongly positive.

  • Global food waste: 1/3 of all food produced is wasted (FAO)
  • Food waste CO₂: 4.4 Gt/year — more than any country except USA and China
  • Packaging as solution: +10 days shelf life = -30% food service waste
  • LCA: compare impact of packaging + food waste vs reduced packaging only

More sustainable packaging materials

Material sustainability is measured on three dimensions: recycled content, end-of-life recyclability and reduction in amount used. Mono-material films (all PP or all PE) are recyclable in existing plastic streams but require machine adaptation. Bio-based films (PLA, PHA) are compostable but not recyclable with conventional plastics.

  • Mono-material PP or PE film: recyclable, but barrier and sealing challenges
  • PCR film (Post-Consumer Recycled): certified recycled content
  • Thinner films (downgauging): -15% / -25% material with same performance
  • Mono PET trays: recyclable, replacing multi-layer PP/PE trays
  • Compostable films (PLA): only for organic collection, not plastic recyclable

The PPWR Regulation: what changes for companies

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) sets: 15% reduction in packaging weight by 2030, minimum recycled content (10-55% depending on material), recyclability of all packaging by 2030 and limitation of unnecessary packaging (overpackaging). Companies that do not comply risk denied access to the EU market.

  • Packaging weight reduction: -15% by 2030 vs 2018 baseline
  • Mandatory recycled content: 30-55% on plastic depending on application
  • Recyclability: 100% of EU market packaging recyclable by 2030
  • Design for recycling: packaging designed to be recycled
