Vacuum vs Skin Packaging

Both technologies eliminate oxygen and protect the product, but they do it differently and with very different shelf results. Find out which is right for your product.

Vacuum packaging

Film is drawn around the product and sealed. The film does not adhere perfectly to the surface: a residual gap remains between film and product, especially at the edges. Mature, economical and reliable technology.

  • Meat shelf life: 21–28 days (vs 5–7 days loose)
  • Film cost: €0.03–0.08/pack
  • Suitable for chambers, thermoformers, belt machines
  • Ideal for whole cuts, cured meats, cheese, fish
  • May generate drip in liquid products

Vacuum Skin Packaging (VSP)

The top film is heated and draped over the product like a second skin, adhering perfectly even to irregular shapes. Creates a premium, retail-ready pack with no visible purge water.

  • Meat shelf life: up to 35–40 days
  • Premium presentation, ideal for retail
  • No visible purge water in pack
  • Compatible with cardboard/plastic trays
  • More expensive film: €0.10–0.25/pack
