Thermoformers fall into three main categories. Semi-automatic models start at 40,000-80,000 euros and suit production of 10,000-30,000 trays/day. Automatic models with feeding and unloading robots range from 100,000 to 200,000 euros. Complete lines with automatic weighing, metal detectors and secondary packaging exceed 250,000-400,000 euros.

But this advantage only materialises at high volumes. Below 30,000-40,000 trays/day, the film saving does not amortise the higher investment.
